Who Are Your Avengers?

I recently watched a brilliant interview with Ben Francis, CEO and Founder of Gymshark. During the conversation, he likened the leadership team at the British fitness brand to the Avengers, describing them as a group of highly skilled individuals, all with their particular strengths. And that when they assemble, not only do these skills complement each other but make them a powerful combined force.

He also referenced the fact that they are better than him in their respective discipline, hugely important for a business growing as rapidly and successfully as the Solihull based brand, but equally insightful when growing into an effective leader. As the famous quote says, “If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room”.

To grow as leaders, we all need to find our own Avengers. Those knowledgeable, adept, and trusted experts that challenge the norm. They force us to think differently about every problem we face and teach us new skills. Without them, our businesses will not realise their full potential and the power that lies within our teams remains dormant.

There are many questions for you to consider, and here is a handful to get you started.

How often do you review what expertise your business needs?

At what level do you need it, Board, Exec, Leadership Group?

Is the expert advisory, consultative or permanent?

Who and where are these experts?

How will this impact the current people in the function or perceived role?

At the heart of everything will be your purpose, lived through a set of values, perhaps with an overarching vision. These are, or should be, at the centre of every business decision you make and will make answering these questions a little bit easier.

Being a leader means you must make difficult decisions about your people and their capability to take the business to the next level. In this situation, honesty is the best policy, and if your purpose, vision, and values are clear, then those difficult conversations are more straightforward than you think. Explaining the why, what and how will help everyone through the process of change.

Ask yourself, who are your Avengers? And do they have the strengths to take your business to the next level?
