When Fear Knocks

Have you ever hesitated before making a significant decision in your business? Maybe you’ve had a great idea but talked yourself out of it. Or you’ve wanted to take a leap and launch a new service, hire a key team member, or even put yourself forward for a leadership opportunity. But then, fear crept in.

Fear is sneaky. It whispers doubts, plays on insecurities, and magnifies risks. But here’s the truth: most of the time, fear is just an illusion.

I came across this simple but powerful proverb recently:

“Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. And no one was there.”

The message is clear: Fear thrives on hesitation and avoidance, but when met with faith, it has no substance and vanishes. Faith, in the broader sense, encourages us to confront our fears with confidence and trust that they will often prove to be unfounded.

When we allow fear to grow in our minds, it feels real. But when we confront it with confidence, belief, and action, it disappears.

The Invisible Barrier

Every successful entrepreneur, leader, and business owner I’ve worked with has faced fear. The most common are:

🚧 Fear of failure – “What if this doesn’t work?”

🚧 Fear of judgment – “What will people think?”

🚧 Fear of uncertainty – “What if I don’t have all the answers?”

Sound familiar?

I’ve been there too. When I left my corporate career to start my own business, fear knocked—hard. What if I failed? What if I couldn’t replace my income? What if no one took me seriously?

But then I reminded myself: I had done the work, I had the experience, and I had a vision.

I answered the knock with faith. Faith in my skills, my network, and my resilience.

And guess what? Fear disappeared.

How to Make Faith Work for You

Now, when I talk about faith, I don’t mean blind optimism. I’m talking about practical confidence. The belief in your ability, trust in the process, and faith that you’ll figure it out even if things don’t go to plan.

Here’s how you can answer fear with faith in business:

✔ Acknowledge fear—but don’t let it take the lead.

Fear is a natural response, but it shouldn’t be the decision-maker. Recognise it, but challenge it.

✔ Focus on facts, not feelings.

Are you basing your hesitation on actual risks, or are you letting fear magnify “what-ifs”? Break things down logically.

✔ Surround yourself with people who reinforce belief, not fear.

Your environment matters. Surround yourself with people who challenge you to think bigger, not shrink into doubt.

✔ Look at your past wins.

You’ve faced challenges before and come out stronger. Why would this time be any different?

✔ Take action.

Fear hates movement. The quickest way to silence doubt is to take a small step forward. Once you do, momentum builds, and fear fades.

The Next Time Fear Knocks…

Fear will inevitably knock again. It always does.

But the next time it does, how will you answer?

You can let it in, give it a seat at the table, and let it hold you back. Or, you can meet it with confidence, belief, and action. Watching it disappear in the process.
