Moving The Window

Have you ever dismissed an idea as “that would never work here”… only to see later it become completely normal?
That’s the Overton Window in action. A concept from politics, it describes the range of ideas people see as acceptable at any given moment. Ideas outside the “window” are labelled radical, unrealistic, or even unthinkable. But as perspectives shift, what was once unthinkable can become acceptable.
Think about how quickly business attitudes have changed in just the past few years:
- Remote working: once radical, now expected.
- Mental health support: once rarely discussed, now seen as essential.
- AI adoption: once niche, now transforming every industry.
The window moved. And leaders had to move with it.
What This Means For Your Business
Your business has its version of this window. It frames the decisions you’re willing to make, the risks you’ll take, and the changes you’ll consider.
For example, many of the leaders I work with believe: “If I’m not involved in every decision, the business will fall apart.”
Inside their window, the delegation feels risky. Outside their window, the idea of working fewer hours while the business grows seems impossible.
But here’s the thing: the businesses that thrive are led by people who shift their window. They move from:
- Unthinkable → “I could step back and still succeed.”
- Radical → “My team can be trusted with big decisions.”
- Acceptable → “I’ll delegate some authority.”
- Mainstream → “My role is to create vision, not micromanage operations.”
Why This Matters for You
If you’re a founder or leader who feels stuck, working harder but not seeing the breakthroughs you want, it’s often because your current “window” is too narrow.
You may already sense this. You’re open to hearing other opinions. You’re ready to take action.
But you may not yet see how you are the bottleneck holding growth back.
Shifting the window isn’t about throwing everything out overnight. It’s about challenging your own beliefs, step by step, until new possibilities feel not only realistic, but necessary.
