Keeping Up Is The Wrong Goal

What if the pressure to “keep up with AI” is actually pulling us in the wrong direction?
Right now, it feels like everyone is being told the same thing.
Learn the tools. Master the prompts. Move faster. Stay relevant.
On the surface, that sounds sensible. Responsible, even.
But underneath it sits a dangerous assumption: That relevance comes from pace.
That if you slow down, you fall behind. And if you don’t keep up, you become obsolete.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth.
Keeping up is a reactive position. And reactive positions rarely lead to good decisions.
AI is accelerating whether we like it or not. Tools will improve. Capabilities will expand. That race cannot be won by humans. And, here’s the thing, it doesn’t need to be.
Because leadership has never been about speed. It’s been about judgement.
The moment we confuse relevance with pace, we stop thinking strategically and start chasing signals. We optimise activity, not intent. We become busy, not useful.
I’ve noticed that the people adding the most value right now aren’t the ones adopting every new tool. They’re the ones creating space to decide where technology genuinely matters, and where it doesn’t.
They’re not trying to keep up. They’re choosing where to stand.
That’s the difference between reacting to change and leading through it.
So perhaps the better question isn’t: “How do I keep up with AI?”
But this: “Where does slowing down allow me to see more clearly?”
I’m curious…where do you feel pressure to keep up, and what would happen if you paused long enough to choose rather than chase?
Have a brilliant week!
