Insignificant, Yet Impactful

A photograph captures a silhouetted figure standing on a rocky hilltop at night, gazing up at the Milky Way as it stretches across a sky filled with stars. The cosmic backdrop features a gradient of warm amber tones near the horizon blending into cool greens and deep purples, highlighting the vastness of the universe and the smallness of the lone observer.

What if I told you the most liberating mindset in leadership is the idea that almost nothing you do really matters?

No, really.

Not in a thousand years. Not in the grand scheme of the universe. Not compared to the cosmic theatre we’re all part of.

It sounds like a recipe for nihilism — but stay with me — because it might just be the most freeing perspective shift you can make as a business owner, leader, or founder.

The Big Idea

Cosmic Irrelevance is the concept that, in the face of trillions of stars, billions of years, and infinite galaxies… You and I are pretty insignificant.

Sounds bleak? It’s not. It’s liberating.

If you’re not here to leave an eternal footprint on the galaxy, then what a relief. You can finally stop carrying the pressure to make the perfect move, say the ideal thing, or build the perfect business.

Instead, you’re free to focus on what matters to you, now, here, today.

Perspective Is Power

When you’re deep in the weeds of running a business, it’s easy to feel like every decision carries the weight of the world. But what if the weight you’re carrying is mostly imagined?

Cosmic irrelevance isn’t about giving up. It’s about permitting yourself to breathe, to lead more lightly, and to focus on what truly matters. When you zoom out far enough, the anxiety shrinks, and clarity grows. You start leading with intention instead of fear.

Here’s how that shift in perspective plays out in practical ways:

1. Ditch the Pressure to Be Perfect

Nobody gets it right every time. And if your decisions won’t echo into eternity, then it’s OK to treat them as experiments. Try, learn, adjust.

2. Get Out of the Paralysis Loop

Ever felt stuck in “what if” mode? Zoom out. In 5, 10, or 50 years — will this decision really matter? Probably not. So act. Don’t overthink.

3. Reclaim Meaning on Your Terms

You don’t have to find meaning “out there.” You make it by choosing what matters. Whether that’s your team, your family, your clients, or your craft.

4. Lead with More Lightness

When you realise most of the world isn’t watching, you stop performing — and start leading with clarity, courage, and presence.

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Lens

This might sound like a modern mindset hack, but the truth is, it’s ancient wisdom, repackaged for today’s world.

The greatest thinkers, emperors, and philosophers in history grappled with the same questions we wrestle with today: What’s the point? How do I act with purpose? What really matters?

Here’s a reminder that you don’t need to be eternal to make an impact today.

🟢 Stoics like Marcus Aurelius reminded themselves daily of how brief and forgettable human lives are — not to fall into despair, but to focus on virtue in the present.

🟡 Albert Camus, the existentialist philosopher, believed that when life has no inherent meaning, we are free to create our own, with passion, rebellion, and truth.

🔵 Modern thinkers like Naval Ravikant and Oliver Burkeman encourage us to zoom out, embrace our limits, and let go of the myth that more pressure = more impact.

From Cosmic Insight to Business Action

So, how do you use this in real-world decision-making?

Try this when you’re stuck or overwhelmed:

  • “If I get this wrong, will it destroy everything?” (Hint: no.)
  • “If this goes right, what new doors might it open?”
  • “What would I do if I weren’t afraid of looking foolish?”

These questions cut through ego and anxiety.

They bring you back to what really matters.

Coaching in the Cosmos

One of my clients, a brilliant business owner, was frozen. A huge opportunity had landed on their desk: a new market, a new product, real potential.

But they couldn’t decide.

They were worried about what their team would think. About how it might impact their reputation. About what people would say if it failed.

We took 10 minutes to zoom out:

  • Would this decision still feel huge in 10 years?
  • Who was watching, judging, or remembering?
  • What would they do if no one else’s opinion mattered?

Suddenly, the tension dropped. The clarity came.

They made the leap.

It wasn’t perfect.

It wasn’t easy.

But it was the right move for them.

So What Do You Do With This?

Let go of the illusion of cosmic importance. Lean into action. Choose meaning. Don’t wait for it.

Here’s a thought to carry into the week:

“If nothing matters on a cosmic scale, then everything you choose to care about matters even more.”

Lead lightly. Build bravely.

What decisions are you holding off on because they feel too big?

What pressure are you carrying that might not belong to you?

Here’s to clarity, curiosity, and cosmic freedom.

Have a brilliant week!
