Be A Flamingo

A cartoon-style illustration of a single bright pink flamingo standing tall and confident among a group of dull grey pigeons. The flamingo is positioned in the centre, surrounded by pigeons facing different directions, against a soft beige background with light green bushes and patches of grass, symbolising individuality and courage to stand out.

What happens when everyone in the room nods… but nobody actually thinks?

We’ve all been there. A meeting where the same ideas go round in circles. Everyone agrees. Nothing changes.

That’s not strategy…that’s conformity.

And it’s quietly holding back some of the best businesses I know.

In a world where AI can draft plans, teams meet remotely, and trends flip overnight, playing it safe has never been riskier. Yet many leaders still play by invisible rules they didn’t even write.

We blend in because it feels comfortable. We follow the “industry norm” because it feels responsible. But while the flock feels safe, the flamingos are out there spotting new horizons.

The Psychology Behind the Flock

In the 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch conducted an experiment. Eight people looked at a line on a card and had to pick the matching one from three options. The correct answer was obvious, but seven of the eight were actors told to give the wrong answer.

In two-thirds of cases, the real participant went along with the crowd. They knew it was wrong. They just didn’t want to stand out.

Sound familiar?

The same thing happens in offices and meeting rooms daily. We silence good ideas before they’ve even had a chance to breathe.

Why It Matters in 2026

We’re entering an era where innovation isn’t optional; it’s the oxygen supply for businesses. AI has levelled the playing field, and the only true differentiator left is how boldly your business thinks.

The next wave of success stories will come from companies brave enough to challenge assumptions, experiment more quickly, and create cultures where curiosity is rewarded, not ridiculed.

That’s what I call “friendly friction.” The courage to ask better questions, challenge respectfully, and keep pushing for a more innovative way forward.

Be a Flamingo

I help business owners and leaders build environments that welcome the flamingos, those thinkers, challengers, the ones who make progress possible.

Remember that flamboyance always beats conformity.

So, where might your business be blending in when it could be standing out?

Have a brilliant week!
